The Story of the Bend Genealogical Society - 

The Bend Genealogical Society began in January 1993, when the Genealogy Committee of the Deschutes Historical Society made the decision to become an independent organization. From that moment, BGS was born, built on the shared belief that family history research deserves its own space to grow, supported by people who are passionate about helping others discover their roots.

Those early members carried forward the spirit of the historical society while creating something new. They understood that genealogy is more than collecting names and dates. It is about preserving stories, understanding where we come from, and sharing knowledge across generations. What started as a small group of dedicated researchers quickly grew into a society where learning, encouragement, and collaboration were central.

From the beginning, BGS has been powered by volunteers. Members stepped forward to lead meetings, organize programs, publish newsletters, and share research skills. Experienced genealogists mentored beginners, while new researchers brought fresh questions and perspectives. This exchange of knowledge became one of the defining strengths of the society.

As genealogy itself has changed, so has BGS. The tools have evolved from paper charts, handwritten notes, and microfilm readers to online databases, DNA testing, and digital storytelling. Through these changes, the society has continued to help members learn new methods while emphasizing careful research and thoughtful documentation.
